Map: The village web site map is on this link. This is not a brilliant effort but it is clear where the village is. See note 1. If you fancy this pretty place, e-mail their tourist office & ask for a decent printed map or get one from the Swiss Tourist Office at 30 Bedford Street, London WC2E 9ED, telephone 020 7420 4900 in GB & 00800 100 200 30, International free-phone or e-mail them.

Notes on the skiing:-

Start of the
Lager run

1. This is mostly easy or moderate, with some nice, long runs down to Grindelwald, either from the Mannlichen (Lager run - cable car from the village centre) or Kleine Scheidegg. To get from the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, one takes several lifts, zig-zagging along the Grindelwald (Itramen) side of the ridge. Apart from the home run by the railway (below, left), there are no runs back from the ridge above Wengen, as this is a cliff.

On the way to Grindelwald Grund
over the Itramen meadows.

Easy way home: schuss path by the railway.

2. The one proper black run is the Lauberhorn race track. This is only really black in the Dog Rock hole, where the racers leap through the air but you cannot, as there are other people on the run! Either pick your moment & slide down it or go over to the left & do a couple of steep turns.

If this holds no terrors for you, this run is a useful short cut home from Kleine Scheidegg via the Lauberhorn, avoiding the long schuss path by the railway for much of its length. You ski down to the Wixi lift first.

Author at the start of the Lauberhorn race track.
