A stiff walk - the Mettelhorn 3406m

About the same height as the OberRothorn, you have to walk the whole height, 1800m up from the village but it is straight-forward & this is the best viewpoint in the area, better than the Matterhorn! There is no longer a signpost to the Trift Gorge in the village on the East side of the high street. It starts next to Grampi's Pub see photo right, but it is not too obvious, so reconnoitre the evening before. Start as early as you can. The path goes steeply up past the Alte Post Hotel to Alterhaupt, Café Edelweiss which may not be operating. This is the true beginning of the Trift Gorge, which is not so steep. Carry on up it to the Trift Hotel, which also may be shut & bear right into the Trift Kumme. This is usually floweriferous. At the end, the path bears right & turns left onto a snowfield, which you cross obviously to the Mettelhorn summit cone. There is a messy zig-zag path to the top. I did it with my 66 year old Father in 5hrs 50mins in 1982. You have to go back the same way but the views are splendid.

The Hohe Balmen

This is the ridge opposite the North Face of the Matterhorn & the reason to go up is the abundance of flowers. Two ways: either take a steep path up from the café Edelweiss (see above - Mettelhorn route) of go up the Trift Gorge to the Hotel & take a marked path to the South which goes up the North side of the ridge, then round the end, where it is soon met by the Edelweiss path: longer but less graft. Eventually, the path descends to the moraine of the Zmutt Glacier & the path back to Zermatt. Follow the signs, as this has changed because of rock fall.
