Growing up in South Africa, with its wealth of natural beauty, different cultures. vibrant colour and intense light has been a continuing source of inspiration to me. The sea and Its environment. and the art of past civilisations have always influenced my Imagery. Layers of time and space are simultaneously concealed and revealed.

I like to think of my work as containing layers of images that move back and forth between the conscious and the unconscious, In a dream-like state."

Marilyn Simler, a painter. recently completed her M.A. degree in printmaking. The freshness of approach Is strlkingly apparent in her work- the result of the experience of a mid-career artist combining her painting skills with those of etching. carborundum and woodcut. The artist has created an innovative manner of working within the mixed media mono-printing disciplines. A painterly. textural quality with a freedom of line and Intense colour combinations typifies her work. distinguishing it from traditional printmaking technIques.

An inventive space is created where the human presence is often apparent or implied. An element of mystery abounds. with no obvious interpretations. Contrasts of light and dark, exaggerations of scale and the presence of the unexpected suggests an open-ended narratlve, evoking exotic images of warmth and vitality.
