Praia da Vitoria, Azores

All of Terceira from the East

We sailed into Praia da Vittoria at 1230, which meant that we could see the whole island of Terceira as we approached.

Praia da Vitoria

The sea was glassy smooth, which became ironic as the day progressed. A somewhat early lunch because the coach mustered at 1310. We were taken up to 545 meters at the edge of the caldera at this end of the island, which also gave views of Praia. The Braemar is moored at the right-hand quay, a £5 shuttle-bus ride into the 'city'. For more about Praia, take this link.

The big caldera, much farmed.

Then across the caldera to another crater of a smaller volcano & down to Angra do Heroismo.

From Monte Brasil Eastwards

We were taken straight up the peninsula called Monte Brasil, for the view, as in this panorama below.

There had been a serious earthquake in 1980 & one could tell by the colour of the roofs which buildings had had to be rebuilt.

Various churches & cathedrals from Monte Brasil

Monte Brasil also has a crater

Then, to the top of the High Street & down it to look at the buildings, including the cathedral (middle picture above), which had been rebuilt after the earthquake & the theatre.

Unfortunately, we did not have time to go to the harbour, the whole point of the town although the main port of the island is now Praia, to which we returned a different way.

Praia Da Vitoria We took the shuttle bus (£5 each) from the ship to downtown Praia & spent an hour exploring this 'city' (it does have a charter) of 7,000 people before going back to the boat too late to eat in the Thistle Restaurant, so ate in the Palms Café.

Then, we had the bad news that the weather further North was so bad that the driver was going to skip Ponta Delgada & beat it back to Blighty. The good news was the great show put on by the Show Team of pop classics but by starting with "River deep, Mountain high", it was downhill from there & 4th Dimension had done "Sweet Caroline" before.
