To St. Petersburg round the Baltic Cruise - Tallinn |
As Avis was going solo into Tallinn, there was no point in her waking at 0636, as I did, getting the chance of a cooked breakfast (haddock & poached eggs) for once when I am taking a coach. This was essentially, the same Tallinn tour as last year, which was ok, as the show was fun but some people were the pits at keeping up & on time. This time, we went to the Song Festival Grounds first & tried to get to the nunnery but it was not yet open, so the coach went off to show us a graveyard in the trees, the locals being more Animist than Christian & which was more interesting than it sounds. |

Back in the city, I saw Avis drifting through the main square. Poor Keith, a lecturing colleague & quite small, on the other coach, had to push a 17 stone weakling, also Keith, around in his wheelchair, who should not have been on the tour at all because of the cobbles. I recommended upgrading this tour from Moderate to Severe. It is, after all, about two miles of walking. We saw this very well-behaved school group (below) go through the Old City. |

The tour got back on time & Avis appeared soon after I had dumped my stuff in the cabin. Lunch, rehearse my talk & read for a bit in the Drawing Room until teatime. I gave my Shostakovich show in the theoretically 'graveyard' slot at 1730 but this was the 'usual triumph' & a lot of people (about 200) came, some saying because of their lack of knowledge about him. From an educational standpoint, this was probably the most useful show I put on. We did stay for the Flanaghan Trio's concert in the even more graveyard slot at 1830 but this was also pretty well attended. |

With another day at sea, I gave my "Mahler, Triumph over Adversity" show, not particularly relevant to this cruise but I always find people curious about him & had given it the previous year on a similar cruise.
