A Round Trip from Munich

This was a holiday we took in September 2001 which continues our popular (judging by the hit rate) East German tour of 2000. We have included it here in case anyone not au fait with travelling in Germany can use the information.

We need to emphasise that Germany is a very easy place to travel just out of season. There seem to be plenty of hotel rooms available & prices are reasonable. This is our route, with the places we slept in, in bold:-

Into Austria to Zell am Ziller

Thursday 13th September 2001

If you were starting this tour as a first pass at Bavaria, the next obvious objective is Loopy Ludwig's chateau of the Linderhof, see this link, but we did that last year. So, this year...

We left at 0915 & bought our Austrian road passes at a café just after the frontier. (You need these to drive in Austria but they are only Sch105, about £5 for ten days. Most garages also have them). We headed for Lermoos but branched off through Bichlbach on the way. The Zugspitze was out to be photoed & we eschewed the tunnel, going by Biberwier up the Fern Pass.

On the way down, we skipped the tunnel under Nassereith but the village was not very interesting. The Miemminger Plateau was, though, on the way down to Telfs, where we picked up the Inn Motorway & the Brenner one, getting off at Schönberg & having to pay a toll, to my disgust.

Stübaital from near Fulpmes

However, the weather had brightened up & I drove, cutting through both Fulpmes & Neustift (which has a Ken web site on this link), up the Stübaital all the way to Mutterberger Alm, where we took the gondelbahn up to the Dresdner Hutte for lunch. I took some photos to embellish the Stübai web site, hit this link for much more. We drove back, going through Telfes (not ot be confused with Telfs before of Tulfes after) & up the Wipptal to Matrai, in order to cross it & go up the East side of the valley to charming Igls, where we stopped for cakes & coffee. Then, past Rinn & down into the Inntal & on to the Zillertal. This turned out to be a surprise at first: there is a lot of light industry in the more northerly part & not very attractive. However, things improved before our target of Zell am Ziller, where we booked into the Hotel Englhof (strictly not in Zell, as over the river in ) & had dinner in town of stag, which Avis enjoyed very much. Unlike the town band, which was not too well in tune & playing in a bandstand by the river in the drizzle which had now moved in.

North East from the Dresdner Hütte, with the Serles in the distance & Habicht to the right.

Charming Igls - try the Café Konditorei for serious cakes
