Avis' 2nd Genealogy tour Baden- Alsace
|
Day One - London to Bad Herrenalb
Up at a horrendous 0300 & left at 0335, earlier than expected & were at Stansted just as they opened the check-in at 5. Gigantic breakfast at Garfunkles. The flight was almost half an hour ahead of time at Baden Airport, which is not the nearest one marked on the map but one nearer the river. We picked up a Renault Clio & drove into Baden-Baden itself, parking at the Festspielhaus & walking into the middle via a suburb to look at the vast, Victorian houses. The middle was pedestrianised as is usual in Germany & we walked through.

The modern Caracalla Baths were not very attractive. We walked up the steps by a spa water fountain & chatted to an American couple, coming back by the church a little way up the hill. There, on tall cradles, were three Roman amphorae, for which we could not devise an explanation. |
Avis' foot was equal to steps uphill, if not so keen on the coming down, which brought us back to the pedestrian area

GernsbachWe went round the old town before going on to our target, Bad Herrenalb, (next page) of which we had never previously heard. |
