Day Nine - A forey in the Rheinland-Pfalz

Another superb breakfast & the bill was E112, very reasonable. We set off West & went a different way from Gernsbach to Baden-Baden. I booked for the night in the Hotel Hirsch in Hügelsheim near the airport, as there was not really enough time to get from the Kühlen Brunnen to the airport in time tomorrow. We carried on into France & went up the motorway & old road to Landau. We found the Villa Strecchius, where Avis exhibited with the Printmakers' Council but my photo did not work! It was still in the hands of the Kunstverein. Parking in Landau proved impossible, so we went on to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, which was full of wineries & underground parking places.

We had a walk round the pleasant Old Town & coffees (E3.40 for 2) in the Town Hall Square. Again, it was getting very hot &, just like yesterday, it reached 33°C eventually.

We drove on, up to Alt Speyer (a long way from Speyer) & down through the forests of the Pfalz, stopping at the Hotel Waldhotel at Johanniskreuz, a noted motor-biker hangout, for a good dinner of Chicken Spatzlese for Avis & Cod for me with rice & salad - E20.10, the best value so far. We went via Dahl & Wissembourg & the motorway again back to Hügelsheim to flake out in the hotel at about 1645 after filling up the car for E30.33. At the hotel, we read in the garden at the side, it being too hot to go in the pool, exposed to the sun as it was. A lot of people had dinner there, even though one side was the main road, which seemed odd but perhaps, it is the best place to eat in town. We just had tea & 2 beers each for E12.40 &, after watching the bats chase flies over the swimming pool, went to bed at 10.
