Budapest Spring Music Festival March 2011 - Day Three - Szentendre |
Don had suggested going to Sentendre by train, which he did & a load of the party did, too. Tube to Bettyani Ter & a suburban train on, which started there & finished in Sentendre, so no problems but the stations on the way all had impossible names. It is North of Budapest & at the point where the Danube is going South towards Budapest. The town is obviously very old & now, very touristy but none the worse for that. We walked round in several ways & along the Danube, stopping for a coffee on what seemed to be the main not-really-square square.
We found a rubbish shop with a lot of dolls & bought Bessie one in a lovely blue ethnic dress for Ft.2,600, which sounds a lot but the currency is tiny per unit: over 300 to the pound. They were very keen to sell us a lot more rubbish but no way. There were a lot of churches & at least, two Orthodox ones. We watched the service in one, which was quite impressive & it seemed a pity it is all superstitious tosh! We got a train back just before one & had poor so-called croque monsieur at a restaurant by Bettyani Ter, then crossed the road to the big view of the wedding cake Parliament Building.

We walked down to "Hammersmith Bridge", crossed it & walked to Deak Ter, where we had a bit of trouble finding the tube station, which surprised us as it is the central one where all the lines cross. After a shower, we read in the lobby until Don arrived & the coach, which was to take us to the boat but he parked a few hundred metres away & we (& some of us are halt & lame) had to walk. The boat was moored across another bigger boat we had to cross. The dinner was a very good buffet, with ethnic items & we had a string trio to entertain us. I requested & got, the Gypsy Princess. The photographer did a good job. We bought his photo & the trio's CD, which Avis thought a waste of money but Dick (who turned out to be a Nederlander) said it was effectively charity, as they would be quite poor. Exactly. These are more or less colleagues. Coach back & a tea party in the lobby. Audrey & her husband, John, had been with us on the Cezanne trip. She remembered me giving impromptu lectures on the tour bus there.
