Extended Family

A TRADITION

...is the Jackson Visit around Xmas. Paul is the Chair of the local Labour Party. Kim lectures & Alice improves with time...

THE AGFHS PLAQUE AT ALLY PALLY

The AGFHS members have become an extended family & our outings feel very much like a large family coach trip. On June 4th, we put up this plaque at Alexandra Palace & it was unveiled by Margaret Hillier, who used to visit her father, an innocent hairdresser, Hermann Richard Fickert, who was swept up with other German nationals & put in what was a very unpleasant camp in the basement of the Palace.

Unfortunately, 'Galaxy Holidays' went bust in June, sabotaging this year's 'family outing' to the Wine Festival & we heard too late to do anything about it.

PARTY TIME

This year's party was on Sunday 13th August. We have to shuffle the invitations, because of shortage of space but we nearly over-invited this year, as with good weather, everyone stayed in, & packed the garden. It was actually Avis' 65th birthday but this was a secret, although two sinners worked it out & brought presents. Avis thought that this year, we should have a few pictures, the way local papers include almost everybody...

THE MURDER OF 'DISCOVER ISLINGTON'

Among the slightly whacky organisations we are (or were) members of was the Discover Islington Network, based on the tourist office in Duncan Street. Owing to the cuts introduced by our new neo-fascist so-called Liberal Democrat Council in an endeavour to reduce the rates, no matter what the cost in human misery, Discover Islington was closed down. Can you imagine anything dumber than closing the tourist office in a village full of restaurants & theatres? In fact, this was one of the least noxious cuts. The Ethnics & Old People bore the brunt. The photo shows Helen Carpenter, the boss & Bob.

KANT'S CAVE & PHILOSOPHY FOR ALL

We soon found another whacky outfit to join. Avis had done a Philosophy course at the City Lit, so we joined 'Philosophy for All', a club which meets in 'Kant's Cave or the Penderel's Oak pub basement in Holborn. Fascinating lectures & it also sports a walking club & a web site. Here we are on the Chilterns:-
