DEATH OF AVIS' BROTHER, PETER

This happened on September 5th, while Ken was in the hills, so we had to dash up to stay in Glossop for the funeral as soon as he got back. Peter had had a domestic accident, possibly exacerbated by the poor health he has suffered from for the last few years. There was a very good turn-out for his funeral in Mottram & at the wake afterwards. We met many family members not seen for a long time & even met a member of Avis' Girl Guides patrol from 60 years ago. Avis' sister Alyson read the eulogy at the funeral, as we have not had much contact with Manchester in recent decades, although we had managed to visit Peter last year.

After the early death of his father in 1965, Peter, born on 9/5/1940, had to take over the family Estate Agency, which he ran successfully until his health became too bad. His son, Michael, had by then, long helped him update it to the 21st Century & continues to run the business.

AVIS 75

Three-quarters of the way, so worth celebrating. On the day, we had a small lunch party for the 'inner circle'.

The following Sunday, Jason & the grand-children, all of them, came round. No problem: Ken had iced two cakes

KEN IN THE WARS

Or rather, 'under the doctor' as people used to say. Two days after Xmas 2009, he lost half the sight in his right eye, that is, grey bars have appeared across it, still giving him binocular vision but only from a metre away, so soldering is Difficult! Moorfields said there was nothing they could do, after three visits & countless tests. Then, he has to get a hernia in the Summer, which should be fixed in December. The annoying thing in all this is he is still disgustingly fit, see the travel pages.

HOLES IN THE ROOF

Ken was always telling the boys you need to keep some 'hole in the roof' money. Well, this was the year we had to spend ours with Terry Henson (07763 529 677 no web site), who replaced the lot. Ken put decking down after on the roof patio instead of the horrible astroturf we inherited.

Avis' cousin Maureen Patz came over from Canada

KEN'S NIECE ZOI COMES HERE TO HAVE A BABY

...a rather better idea than having him (as they turned out) in Greece. We went to Ely to have lunch with Zoi & Milton in that lovely town, they having taken a cottage in a remote village nearby. She had Raphael Economu in Addenbrooks Hospital in February & soon went back to Greece.

A tiring experience

Come on, Raphael, give us a smile.
