Spielboden & the Langfluh

Spielboden means 'play floor' & you can get up to there by gondelbahn from just outside the village, then by cable car up to the Langflüh & then walk back. But it is pleasant to walk (& cheaper). Go SW out of the village & either head towards the huge glacier moraine, to the left of which a path goes up or keep to the left & circle round to the West on another path, which may be damaged by last winter's run-off. This is always a gamble. I go up this way & either down the other or carry on up the moraine on the way back & take the traverse path to the Hannigalp (see the walk below). Anyway, the two paths meet up & zig-zag up to Spielboden. You will almost certainly be importuned by marmots, huge hamsters with whistles. They want chocolate biscuits but these are bad for them. Give them carrots or nuts instead. Keep to the path & avoid the steep, grassy slopes, especially when they are wet, as I have seen the rescue helicopter recover a body here. From Spielboden, the path to Langflüh is rougher but goes up through several different flower habitats & worth doing. You are now on the Fee Glacier. Don't go for a walk unless properly equipped. There are a lot of crevasses, which may be hidden in early Summer. There are cafés at both places & one half-way up, just off the path but obvious.

Mellig 2701m

There are several paths marked from the village to the Hannigalp or you can take the gondelbahn. There is also the traverse path mentioned above from the Fee Gletscher moraine. The path continues rockily up to Mellig, which is a summit on a spur of the Gemshorn. Best views of the Weissmies range across the Saastal to the East. It is the same way back to the Hannigalp but take a different way to the village from there.
