Asturias, Euskal Herria & France Cruise - Getxo Page |
Tuesday 27th May 2014 but coming in the previous evening
Getxo later in the evening of Monday, when we arrived
We actually came into Getxo on the Monday evening, after the short voyage from Santander. The weather, which had been unpleasant in Santander, gradually improved, so by time we had tied up in Getxo at around 20:00, there were traces of Sun to be seen, which improved more later. Next morning, we took the shuttle to the Areeta tube station (tickets €6.80, returns for 2, i.e. €1.70 single) at about 09:20 & got out at San Manias station in Bilbo (15km up the river valley), so it was largely, a walk through parks to the Guggenheim, after negotiating the building site for their huge new football stadium, Arsenal, eat your heart out. This route passes the local Museo, with generally, better art in it than the Guggenheim & has been much expanded since we were last here in 2004. We stopped for coffees (€3 for 2) in the Alameda Mazzaredo, where there had just been a huge sea of mud when we were here before. Unfortunately, some idiot gave planning permission for a tall, bland, office block (& should be hung from it), which ruins the view of the Guggenheim from the bridge. We did not go in, as there was a Yoko Ono show & she is not worth paying for.

This city is tightly squeezed between the steep hills of the river valley. There is a limit these days, how far Avis can walk in the sunshine, so we went to the Plaza Moyua & took the tube back to Getxo
