Round Britain Cruise - Orkney Page Two - Kirkwall |
Tuesday August 20th 2013 afternoon
After lunch, we went into Kirkwall & had a look round. The cathedral seems out of proportion to the town. John Rae was a famous Polar explorer, not rated by the English because he used Inuit technology (scruffy but effective) & brought back the unwelcome news that Sir John Franklin's party had eaten each other in 1845. See this link for more gruesome details.

We explored the Earl's Palace, the diminutive High Street & harbour before going back to the ship. Earl Patrick was a Scottish Governor of Orkney & a Bad Lot.

Avis kipped while I processed photos. Geof & Bruce (singers) did a show before dinner & Jamie, the Cruise Director collared me to do a talk on the last day. We decided to to do "Johnny Foreigners' Sea Music" (since renamed "Sea Music from Mainland Europe" to avoid offending Johnny Foreigner), as some pax had seen the British version. Dinner was a Chinese buffet in the Palms, for which we had booked. There was a British sing-song before the show team did a British show.
