Avis' 2nd Genealogy tour Baden- Alsace |
Very good breakfast. It rained during the night & it was dull for most of the day, with the odd outbreak of Sun in France. There was a Farmer's Market outside the school in Bonndorf. We set off South on a very attractive road, which dropped gradually towards the Rhine, turning off at one point to see if we could find a castle - failed. We crossed the Rhine into the grottier industrial part of Switzerland but it looked as if Brugg would be worth a visit when not raining.
We carried on South to Aarau, passing Schloss Wildegg (above), then North on a country road to Rheinfelden, which was indeed very pretty. So is the town of Rheinfelden, which I visited in 1974 & we went round the old town for a while before crossing back into Germany by the bridge there. |

One can dodge the German part of Basel on the motorway & we came off before it joined the Rhine Valley one. Lunch was a comedy. The first place we tried had an A-board out but was shut & the second, the Landgasthof Engemühle, was preparing for a wedding party. However, they served us splendid Schweinesschnitzels & beers at their bar for only E24.40, while rushing around with what seemed far too many cakes for 96 guests. We got out through the throng of wedding guests & drove up to Neuenberg, where we crossed to France.
