Avis' 2nd Genealogy tour Baden- Alsace |
The bill at the Hotel du Musée was a modest E251.20. We left at 0910 & got on to the motorway into Germany, staying on it until turn-off 61 just North of Freiburg. We went East on the road up the Glottertal & turned up the road to the Kandel, the biggest hill hereabouts at 1453m. There was a charming village, Sägendobel, stuffed into a narrow valley on the way. |

We walked from the car park up to the summit (about 10 mins) for a tremendous view & had our cheapest coffees of the trip (E1.70 each) at the Gasthof. We could see that the Feldberg still had snow on it. The road down we expected to take, was closed. This was actually advantageous or we would have missed St. Peter, which has a big monastery, with a baroque church containing wall & ceiling paintings. There were also statues of what one assumes were local bosses but we did not recognise the Latin name of the area. St. Peter Monastery courtyard |

Carrying on, we turned off down a steep road to the Hexenmühle, which had a double water-wheel arrangement & then, up a rough road to Neukirch. Here, we took the main road down the Simonswaldtal, all of which is marked as pretty & quite correctly. We stopped at the Hotel Engel at Obersimonswald for a splendid lunch, with a free starter for only E35.90, coffee E1.70 again. Then, off to the end of the valley to join the Elztal at last. It was now very hot. We went up the valley. Elzach seemed rather nice but we went on, over the top to the West to Haslach (pictures next page), where we wandered round the old town & bought more water. |
