Sunday 2nd July 2006 Dresden

At least, the breakfast justified the hotel's 4 star status. We drove into the city centre along the Coventrystrasse, not the straightest way but the sign-posted one, a sort of urban motorway at the city end. We parked in the car park under the Frauenkirche, as the signposts to the Semper Oper car park evaporated, an annoying tendency much observed in Luxembourg.

We walked along the 'armchair of Europe', this time in the Sun, so took better photos than on the AGFHS trip. We went round the Zwinger Art Gallery, which is enormous & has a lot of famous paintings (E12). After a coffee break (E5), we whizzed round the armoury because it was on the same ticket, then strolled round the area before wandering back in now hot sunshine to the car park (E4.50).

We drove out on the North side of the Elbe, Eastwards towards Pillnitz, a little too far & had to double back a bit.

We were looking for the enchanting Carl Maria von Weber (the composer) museum in his summer house at Hosterwitz, run by the indefatigable Frau Dorothea Renz, who jabbered in German despite my request for a slow-down but got most of her meaning over. She also sold me the booklet but it was only E6.50 altogether!

We drove on East near the river through hordes of cyclists almost to Pirna, where we found a new bridge over the Elbe, which allowed us to return on the rather grottily industrial South side to the road off to Kreischa, where the Schumanns fled during the 1848 revolution.

Kreischa Schumann memorial

We had ice-creams (E8 with tip) & the Wirt told us where the memorial was, next to the Town Hall (see photo). On the way back, we went into the Wieckstrasse but no. 10 is nothing like the house depicted on the web as the house of Wieck, Schumann's piano teacher & father of his wife-to-be. I wanted a better photo, as that one is lousy. Then, a hot but quick drive back to the hotel.
