Germany - A Saxony Culture Tour |
Monday 3rd July 2006
Big breakfast & Avis made herself some sandwiches. I drove back along the motorway to the first junction & turned North to Meissen. We parked by a side river & walked through the Neugasse up to the Dom, which involves a large number of steps up the hillside, Meissen being very constrained by hills.
Frauenkirche |
Frauenkirche altarpiece |
Markt |
The view was worth it (not to say, the paces). We had coffee in the Dom coffee shop (E4) before walking down & moving the car to the Porcelain Factory car park for the show & tour. This was E16 but worth it, as after the gross museum of Meissen figures, we were demonstrated the working methods as well as getting a description of the entire process & were given English language headsets.
Dom Hill |

Steps up |

Elbe panorama |
Schloss Moritzburg |
Kathe Kollwitz' house |
We drove out of Meissen to the East & stopped before Moritzburg to eat our late lunch, which we supplemented with ice-creams (E 8.90) in the café of this not over-large but bulky castle in its artificial lake. I had deliberately not told Avis the real gem of Moritzburg, the Kathe Kollwitz House (E6), an inconvenient walk from the car park in the now considerable heat (parking was E4 altogether today). |
The house was rather bare but displayed quite a number of her glooooomy prints. We were soon on the Berlin motorway & I whizzed us back to the hotel, although the speed limit had been "reduced" to 120kph in places. We had pork escaloppe (me) & tagliatelle with salmon (Avis) for dinner. Although it was hot here, CNN said it was hotter in London!
