Alpine trip 2017 - Füssen Page |
Friday 8th September 2017
Up at 07:23, Avis thinking it was an hour later. The café opened at 8 and there was a great selection of stuff for breakfast. After cleaning our teeth, we went back to pay & they only took cash! €82. Cheap. I filled up the truck €45.80. The route is a bit odd at first: straightforward to the A63 (right turn) but at Karlsruhe, this becomes the 10 again without any junction. Eventually, there is a right turn onto the A5 & after one kilometre, a left turn onto the A8. The rule is,follow signs to Pforzheim. We had an easy drive & a moderately lazy one, except for one thing. Avis took over on the long slog on the A8 & soon ran into a huge traffic jam that wasted an hour, which we had to spare anyway. When we got to the cause, there was a car wth a totally smashed front &, one imagines, a totally smashed driver & a tanker with its paint scratched, possibly a lesson in not going to sleep while driving or not having a heart attack. It was grey at first but brightened up as we went along. We stopped for butties South of Ulm, through which I had elected to go but it was longer & quicker round the motorway, as we overtook someone twice, an English camper van. We stopped for a snack lunch at the Illtal Services, €14.36 by card. Traffic diminished considerably as we got closer to Füssen. It was quite easy to find the Hotel Sonne, which is much posher & dearer than the Esher but still reasonable. We went for a walk through the Old Town but it got cooler & we went back to the hotel to check over our clothes after coffees at the Restaurant Woaze, served by a servile grumpy boy €4.80. Back at the hotel, we read. Then, we decided to try to get Avis a wooly jacket & soon did in Cecil opposite. It is plastic, stylish & was nearly £100 but what the hell? We went for another walk round the town &, on the advise of the hotel, went back to Woaze for a proper ethnic Deutsch dinner, me with Schinkenhaxe & Avis with a Turkey Schnitzel, €34.10 cash again. (Last time we ate there was 11/9/2001, with puzzled & distraught Americans). Then, we had ice creams in the hotel. There was a South Effrican couple who were on a walking tour & intending to live near London but he was a Brexiter, revealed when I commented about rats joining a sinking ship. We read for a while after.
