Touring the Dolomites

Day Five The weather seemed marginally better, so we set out on SS48, up & over to Misurina, which has a lake, hotels & allegedly, a view of the Drei Zinnen. We stopped & fought our way through a coach-load of Lotharingians for coffees but the hills did not come out. We thought to give them a chance, so waited by the lake at Lago Antorno, part-way up the Drei Zinnen toll road before we had to pay & read our books for an hour but they never came out. So, we drove down to Auronzo for.a snack lunch of Crèpes & on round the Southern side of the Dolomites back to Cortina. It was too soon to pack up, so we went some way on tomorrow’s road & up a steep side turning, labelled by the National Park people & very narrow (passing places) to the Rifugio Ra Stua, where we had more coffee & a chat to the family of a half-Italian, who has done an 2nd Archaeology degree, with an English wife & 9 month little boy. They had lived in London but now, in Milan & he has his own 1st dig of some Etruscan stuff, funded by Americans. He also has inherited his father’s farm, lucky sod. We went down & on back to the lake at Lago Antorno. This time 1.5 Zinnen came out eventually & we went back over the top on SS48 again. Because we saw so much, the day was a success d’estimé.

Day Six Rain, lots of it, so I backed up the truck to load luggage & Avis. We set out at about 09:10 & went up to Dobbiaco, then along the main road to Lienz in a moving traffic jam. There was no question of doing the planned Grossglockner High Road, so I turned up to the Felbertauen Tunnel, a good deal faster. There was a toll to pay, €11. Ahead of us were some Scottish motor-bykers getting soaked. It was actually snowing as we came out of the tunnel. When we got to Mittersill, it was still pouring, so no visit to Webern’s grave. We did stop for coffees €5.40 just below Pass Thurn, as I needed a rest. Down the other side, we filled the truck up at Kitzbuhel. We went past the little resorts down into the Inn Valley, where the rain was not so heavy. For dinner-at-lunch, we turned up to the Achensee but there was not a good view to be had. Odd. I had a schnitzel & Avis, something with strips of chicken. Back to the motorway, the rain stopped. There was a bit of Sun & blue sky but not much. When we got to Landeck, it started to rain again. I pulled into the Hotel Bruggner-Stubn I have used before when walking, who had a room & its own big car park. Room One is huge.
