Ken Baldry crosses Switzerland on Foot -Engadine to Davos, the Fluela Pass bad weather option |
Tuesday 25th June 2013 Fluela Pass bad weather alternative
There is also the possibiity to walk over the Flüela road pass from Susch to Davos (17.4 miles), which seems attractive & cuts Klosters out entirely, recommended for those who do not wish to risk meeting Prince Charles in Klosters. I had to do this road walk in the teeth of a snow storm but walking the road is reasonably safe in such conditions, whereas the path can disappear under dangerous loose snow (&, as happened the next day, when I tried the Strela Pass from Davos. I had to turn back). The pass heads West from the South end of Susch village, goes up the Val Grialetsch (they speak Romansch here but German works ok), crosses it & gets height by two sets of zig-zags, then turns (after 3 hours) into a hanging cwm on the West side. (this is when the snow got really nasty. It stings your face). After about another hour, the Passhöhe comes into sight. There should be lakes both before & after it but these were still frozen n June 25th 2013. At least, you can get warmed up & a very nice lunch. I had a Käseschnitte & beer, energy food. Going down, I stepped on the gas, as I soon froze down again & got to Davos (& it is thankfully, downhill all the way) in 2hrs 45mins, nearly 7 hours altogether plus the lunch break. I eschewed the footpath short cuts, as they were snow-filled. The Hotel Parsenn in Davos Dorf gave me shelter & a vital hot shower.
