To the Black Sea - Ephesus Page |
Thursday 27th October 2016
Warm. A 40 minute coach ride, first to to alleged “House of the Virgin Mary”, found after some probably side-effect ravings of a German nun. The house has been ‘restored’ & it is quite clear where the new bit is. It was at the top of a hill above Ephesus, today’s target.

The House of the Virgin Mary (yeah?) |
This very large ancient city sprawls down the side of a hill & is being sensitively excavated, leaving large areas for future methods. There is a Main Street, which runs down from a Top Agora.
Entrance right of Ephesus. Baths.

Here, the main street turns right across the bottom of the hill at a less steep drop towards the Port Street, at right angles to the left & below the giant Amphitheatre, which is still in use.

Not far along Port Street, one gets out of the site to the right, the coach having (thankfully) come down, having dropped us at the top. Even the collection of rubbish shops is tidy. |
