Aalborg

Saterday 17th December

You have to go up the Limfjord to get to Aalborg

Aalborg's berth in in the town centre. The white building is the castle (slot in Danish)

Presumably, we cannot get in the Southerly end of the Limfjord. This became obvious when we eventually got into Aalborg, as the bridge across the fjord only had a small drawbridge in the middle, which would certainly have not let the “Black Watch” through. We sailed up the fjord through mist & arrived in the town at about 2. Once cleared, we walked into the town, the berth probably being the closest to the town centre we have ever experienced, beating Cadiz.

Lille Kongsgade (Little King Street)

Biggest old building

There were a number of medieval buildings & a pedestrianised, largely shopping, area but did allow us easily to get to the Cathedral & Xmas Market.

Shopping area

There was a slight hill & I pushed a wheelchair from the ship to help an old mother with an everything handicapped son. I photoed the Cathedral & an old monastery dated 1506.

The market was minimal & had a lot of sheep skins. Given the cold, one could see the point. There was a skating rink North of the market.

We went on past the Town Hall to the next pedestrian area but this was largely normal shopping. We did stop for hot chocolates, which came with chocolate-covered marshmallows but were DK52 (£5.77). I had some ancient crowns & paid cash. Then, we walked back to the ship up the Slotsgade & I went into the castle (slot) courtyard, to find it looking older than the outside. Then, back into the ship.
