Christmas Markets - Wismar Page |

A square in Wismar, behind the Council offices
We took a shuttle bus into Wismar, which turned out to be a delightful, well-preserved (or well patched up by the DDR) Hanseatic port town. The port itself was no great shakes but the bus stopped at the Market Square, filled with a Xmas market in front of the Rathaus. A look round & coffee in Café 28, a bit like a drawing room.

Then, we walked down behind the Rathaus (Town Hall) to Spook Church (Heilige Geist), which had a wooden ceiling, much carved & painted but each beam different. The stained glass was also attractive & there was the remains of a medieval wall painting. The size was sensible as well, which could not be said of the other churches visited.

First, St Georgen, quite massive, St Mary, of which only the tower survives &, after I had dropped Avis onto the shuttle bus, St Niklaus, which was hugely massive. This town is all in brick but much is stuccoed. We had visited the council offices with painted terracotta & the pretty square behind. I found the Zeughaus, Swedish Armoury, which is now the public library & followed the little fresh water supply canal called Frische Grube, to St Niklaus before walking back to the ship, chatting to some Germans in their own argot on the way.
