Caribbean Cruise April 2013 - St.Johns, Antigua Page |
Sunday 14th April
The South view of St.Johns Harbour, photoed pm, otherwise there would be no Sun on it
Like the last two ports, we came in from the West, rather screwing photography. Berthed next to us was the Delfin, full of Krauts from Hamburg. I was up at 0620 for photos I did not get. I walked round the very quiet town (it was Sunday), occasionally meeting Gerries & practising my Kraut. I went up to the cathedral, which is being restored but there is a pile of rubble in front of it. Then, I walked down to Sir Vivian Richards Road to photo his Mum's house, in which she still lives, apparently. I photoed a lot of buildings on the way there & back.

The tour was essentially, to Nelson's Harbour, as we went through rather dull countryside first. On all the islands so far, they seem to import food that they could well grow on the land that used to grow sugar cane. We went up to the defences of the harbour entrances above the lagoons, three different locations with excellent views over the Dockyard & Falmouth Harbour beyond. I got the photos I need for my Berlioz talk.

We did not really have enough time to look round the actual dockyard, (especially after the extra strong rum punch). This is the only remaining Georgian Dockyard & in current use.

The show in the evening was a new entertainer, a magician who used Hollywood as a background, on which he must have put in a lot of work but the overall effect gave the impression of needing even more work on it.
