Leixoes for Porto

Two Days at Sea

Down the Irish Sea, it ws quite lively but the Bay of Biscay behaved itself, although the Cruise Virgins complained as usual.

Wednesday 24th December 2014

We disembarked to Portuguese folk dancers in the terminal shed & walked to the tram. It later turned out I got the tickets all wrong, so paid in the end, €5.50, when it should have been €7. We got off at Trinidade this time.

Town Hall

We walked down the Avenida dos Aliados to a café full of Fred’s clients who used the ship’s bus. We paid €4 for 2 hot chocolates. Then, we walked up the Priests’ Street to their Tower. This has a tiny chapel open but otherwise, only the tower with over 200 steps, not Avis’ scene.

Other way: Cathedral

We walked on the the Double Church, the gloomy Igreja do Carmo & the lighter Igreja dos Carmelitas. We had a look at the tacky interiors & even more tacky cribs.

Playa Carlos Alberto

Then via the Playa Carlos Alberto triangular square & back a different way to Trinity Station & to the ship. The drawbridge went up just as we were about to go over, so we had lunch at about 13:55 in the Secret Garden. I had bratwurst & bread, as it was quite cold. Going out after lunch with a woman born in Stockport & sounding it: Judith, we walked North through the resort part of Leixoes, past the fortress.

The Fortress (end 16thC?) of Leixoes

The Lighthouse of Leixoes

Then, partly along the beach, observing the rocks which act as natural groins & the rough sea. We went past the lighthouse to a little chapel on a low headland, then back to the ship, getting back about half an hour before departure time.

The next day was Xmas day at Sea & so was Boxing Day.
