An astonishing splash of Sun on Torshavn Harbour
Into Torshavn &, given that they are only supposed to get two days Sun per year, Ken was lucky enough to get 5 minutes to take photos. We took a coach tour to Vagar Island, reached by a tunnel after a mountainous drive with a couple of smaller tunnels on the way.
We drove some distance past various villages & the airport (courtesy of the RAF) to Gásadalur, until recently cut off by a headland, over which everyone had to walk, until a one-way tunnel was built in 2006. Here, we wandered through the village, built on Scottish principles, of houses, mostly turf-roofed, to a sort of shop run by an artist who gave us coffee & had locally made clothes. Her grandfather brought the post over the headland & his father before him. This place means Goose Valley. Then, we started back, stopping at places we passed on the way West. |

The next village was Bøur, which has a by-pass. We walked down from the North end into the village, observing more turf roofs but we were assured that, although turf roofs used to be the only option for poor people, now they are expensive & only used by rich people making a modest impression, which fools no one. The churches are Lutheran & observation is far greater than in mainland Denmark. Someone had left the key in the door of this one, so we had a look in inside. |

The last village stop was at Sandavag, rather larger than the other two. This was for the unusually ornate Lutheran church.

On the way back by the old road |
After returning through the undersea tunnel, the driver took the old road, which, going much higher over the tops to Torshavn, is impassible in the Winter. The views are superb, though.
