Haydn Tour - April 2016 - Liszt Page |
Thursday midday - Liszt's Birthplace at Raiding
We were done in time to contemplate going to Raiding for Liszt’s birthplace, which used to be in Hungary but is now in Austria, just. Back almost to Eisenstadt & down a motorway & the four lane S31, we found it easily. The outbuildings were destroyed in WWII but the main part of the house, at least the three main rooms, survives & has been better looked after since the photo in my lecture. The organisation was a shambles owing to lack of staff. A not-very-helpful girl in the office & an extremely helpful guy who was over-stretched & had to keep running (literally) between the concert building & the house.

Reconstructed 'Blue Salon' |
The 'Blue Salon" was his digs in Budapest until he got his own flat there. The curator asked how we had found Raiding (as we were not in a coach party), so I told him who I was, invoking the magic name of Webern & he was suitably impressed. It was about 13:20 when we left, so we craved lunch. We stopped in Wepperstein, where we had left the S31. Not hopeful-looking until I spotted the Gasthaus Fuchs, where we had dinner for €24 including drink & tip. I had 8 sort-of black pudding croakettes with minute chips & salad & Avis, a cordon bleu so big she had to invoke my help, amazing value.
