Canaries Xmas Cruise 2021 - La Gomera Page |

Coming into San Sebastian, the Capital
At breakfast, we sat next to David & Elizabeth, she (Swiss) not only remembering my talks in 2014 but my name. A perfectly blue sky for a change, which lasted all day. We went on an all-day tour, which coincided with our last one at first but we had more (& better ) chat from the native guide, explaining about the three levels of vegetation: the banana & pine level, the Heather Tree level & the Laurel level. The interesting fact that they had about enough water without the desalination plants elsewhere in the Canaries, owing to the rain & wet clouds that sit on top sometimes.

We stopped for coffees at El Cercado when we got to the top of the island, about the same height as Ben Nevis. Then, we went down to sea level through the Valle Gran Rey, the Great King being the last of the Guanches, who were wiped out by the Spanish invaders

Back up into the Laurel Jungle at the top, we stopped at a restaurant after a walk through the jungle. We had the fortune of being on a table with David, Elizabeth, Terry & Seamus. They gave us plenty of food, although the crayfish David & I had was a mistake. Avis had excellent veal. While waiting for pudding, I told the story of Teophanu introducing forks to Western Europe.
