To the Frozen North - South coast of Iceland day |
This trip was billed as "Rising from the Ashes". Muster time was 0740, so up at 0603 & breakfast at 0633 in the Garden Café. The coach filled up quickly, so we were stuck on the back row. It was a lovely day again. We set off for the South coast, stopping for 'comfort' after an hour or so & where I dashed up the road for a photo of Eyjafjallajökull from the West. This is the naughty volcano which shut down all the airports in 2010. We could see the Westman Isles we had seen from the sea two days ago.

Then, to the highest but by no means biggest, waterfall. There is a sill line with waterfalls all the way along.

Then, on to Skogar (pronounced score) for a museum set up by a boy who deplored the junking of ethnic items & was there, now aged 91, where he played us the Icelandic dulcimer & sang.

There was also an Old Building Museum there, with houses from various periods & social classes but all very small.

We had a negligible lunch of soup & bread & drove to a nearby waterfall, almost as high as the other with much more water. I walked well up the side & filmed the rainbow, as it had cut back into the lava, all the geology being very recent.

We turned back & called at the Volcano Museum, which had film of Eyjafjallajökull (which was just outside) doing its thing. I walked back up the road for a photo of the hill.
