Narsarsuaq, Greenland

Narsarsuaq means "the great plain", which is what prompted the Americans to build an air-base on it in World War II but it has long been abandoned, only the actual airstrip being used now. Up at 0703 in this rather dismal port, tied up to a mouldering quay. That was good, as we expected it to be a tender port.

We left on an ancient bus for a trip just beyond the village to where we could start walking up what seemed like moraine but with a lot of roche moutonées in it. There was a bit of up & down but mostly up for 90 minutes to a viewpoint where we could see the glacier at the end & the "Four Sisters of Kintail", as I promptly named the hills at the end. Then, back again. It was quite hot & several people were over-dressed.

Avis went into the pool before lunch. After, I went up to the top for the view & then, chattered for quite a while until 'tea' where I met Avis again. A quick one scone cream tea & off to the Neptune Lounge to fix up my system with Ariel, the Techo. I gave my show, as instructed, "They Came to Spain" to a small audience, not surprising considering the wonderful weather. We sailed at 6 & I took a lot of photos of ice mostly.

The terminal moraine jam close up. Fjords get deeper as you go into them.

Opposite Narsaq, there was a French cruise ship which had obviously come from that port but was in thicker ice. It extricated itself ok & sailed with us out of the 50 mile long fjord. It was getting dark as we came to the open sea.
