Norwegian Coast Cruise 2012 Trondheim Page |
During the day before we reached Trondheim, we crossed the Arctic Circle again, having crossed it during the night on the way up. This prompted much silliness as crossing the Equator does, with King Neptune (Paul Blackwell, lead singer of the Show Team), his Queen (Nathan, a host), Ricky (Cruise Director) as Chief Justice & various entertainment crew as pirates. Several people were 'tried at the Court of King Neptune', starting with the First Officer, then the Safety Officer, Maintenance Office, Doctor (Brian, who will be on Saga Sapphire with us), Roseanna (as the New Girl, guilty of extreme efficiency, as well as being a sweety, although only two months in the job out of college: she is a future cruise director) & one or two others, all getting dunked in the Pool & Ricky did too but not expecting it. At 4pm, I gave my Sibelius talk.

We had elected to stroll round Trondheim on the only really sunny day of the whole cruise.

Old buildings |
After a dull walk through the docks, the city is a mixture of some old buildings & some new ones, not always well-considered from an architectural point of view. We went to the ancient Church of Our Lady, which had a café we did not use & a bare interior but with a baroque altar piece, incongruous in a Lutheran church & some black & white paintings.

I asked & was told it was Church of Norway i.e. Lutheran. Then, on our way to the big godshop, we happened upon a street which it turned out had been the main street of Trondheim but narrow & paved with stones in an arrow formation pointing to the sea. There was an art gallery with very good work, some of which I sneakily photoed, having done the same to some of Fred's this morning. We chatted to the owner & gave him our web site address.

Then, to the cathedral but they charge to go in, so we declined & photoed the Bishop's Palace.

Sail-away Party |
There was a sail-away party on the quarter deck, where we talked to people, as one does & danced. Some guy asked me in surprise, (I am an Hon. Professor of Music Composition, which people knew because of the talks I had given) if I knew the pop music Maredith (correct spelling: she's Filipina), the can-belto ship's night-club singer, was singing. I asked if he thought I had gone around for the last 60 years with my fingers in my ears.
