Western Mediterranean - Almeria Page |
Thursday 21st May
In the morning, we went on a tour to a village called Nijar on this link.
Panorama of the Almeria Alcazaba from the ship
After an abbreviated lunch, I walked up through the Old Town past the Cathedral to the Alcazaba.

Approaching the entrance |
This is a huge, largely Moorish castle with a couple of Visigoth towers remaining. From the ship, it looks bigger still but, when in the lower bailey, which is laid out as attractive gardens, one can see that there is another castle behind opposite over a valley. (That is the one with the Christ statue).

The Clock Tower from the Lower Bailey |
One climbs further up to an inner bailey, where there is archaeological work going on, 13 centuries of jerry-built repairs & mods being examined. One cannot go up the highest tower (yet?) but one can get up to the Clock Tower, where there is a vast view over the city.

I went down a different way back to the ship.
