Italy etc Cruise April 2019 - Sorrento Page |

West Sorrento from the ship
East Sorrento from the ship
Not the best day to arrive at Sorrento & it is an anchor port, meaning one has to get ashore by lifeboat, While it may look as if the sea is calm, just a little swell is enough to make disembarking from the ship 'interesting'. We went ashore & did something Ken had not doen on previous trips but then, he was not a History lecturer then. This was take photos in the churches, at least, those we could get in. This, after a coffee (€3 each, outrageous). We walked to the lift as the cliffs are vertiginous. This came out near the 1st church.

We found a quiet restaurant for a coffee, the main streets being very busy. Then, to the Main Square and the Santuario Madonna del Carmine, the 2nd Church. This had a dome & a painted ceiling.

Sorrento Main Square
The main shopping street is pedestrianised, someting that had not happened last time we were here. Tasso, the poet, must have come from here as he is clearly Big.
Torquato Tasso |
There is another interesting church on the main street. It looks about 12th Century but there is only a plaque saying it was renovated in Pope Pius X time. The interior looks as if it had been renovated in Baroque times as well.

Then by the St.Francis preaching to the Birds statue to the belvedere & down the lift to the walk back to the port (La Piccolo Marina) for the tender back to the ship. Several enthusiastic receptions to my Still European tee-shirt & some sideways glances.
