Villages near St. Marie de Gosse in a Southerly direction |
Places |
Urt is the key to points South.
You drive South & turn right, sign-posted to St. Laurent de Gosse, which has a narrow rad with in 2010, a crummy surface, through it. Turn left at the T-junction & left again at the roundabout. This takes you over the Adour River to Urt, if, after going up the hill, you turn left. This attractive village has a church worth looking over. If instead, you follow the 'Autres Directions' & the road to Biscous, you can pick up the free section of the A64 motorway to Bayonne (where it joins the A63, which costs).

After passing through Urt, at the next t-junction, turn left & follow the signs to La Bastide Clairence. Despite the name, this is a very Euskera-looking (Basque) village & rather steep. But this small place has 61 names on the 1914-18 War Memorial.

Hasparren
There is a road junction off to the right after halfway up La Bastide Clairence, to Hasparren (photos below). You need to go this way to several of the Pyreneean directions but watch out for the iffy traffic signs. The next village to call at is Cambo-les-Bains.
From Hasparren, one approaches Cambo from the valley but it is set high up on the valley wall. There is a great view from the terrace of the church. From Cambo, turn South (direction St. Jean Pied de Port) for that town &, before it, St. Martin for the Col d'Izpegi on this link.
