Norway Coast Cruise - Tromso - March 22nd 2010 |
Amundsen |
Snow on the quarter deck again but not as much as yesterday. We had moored in Tromso Fjord by breakfast time. I took a panorama photo which defeated Photoshop! Fortunately, there was a courtesy bus into Tromso, as it was quite a long way along the modern industrial part of Tromso from the mooring. We were deposited by the tourist office, who gave us a map. We walked up past the old wooden cathedral & along past the quaint old buildings to a little triangular square with a porn clothing shop (!) & which lead to the foot of the high bridge. We walked up to the middle for the view, which was quite extensive but much colder, say -9°C instead of -4°C. This was worth the trouble although it was quite slippery underfoot. On the way back, we visited the Polar Museum, which was very well presented, although most of the early explorers were there to kill animals for their fur. Obviously, it was big on Nansen & Amundsen & quite right, too. We had spent 3 hours in Tromso & the weather was deteriorating, walking back through snow fall to catch the bus to the ship for lunch. This did stop but it stayed dull or worse. The afternoon consisted of alternating fog, sunshine, cloud & snow storm with more than one session of each during those few hours, so we stayed on the ship. The panorama below was taken during the afternoon. So much for Troms County weather. |

There was a 'Round the World' show in the Lounge: the usual bad music (except when it was real, like the Piaf songs) & generally competent dancing & playing. We stuck it out but they ended in England with "There'll always be an England" & "Land of Hope & Glory". They missed out Germany or we may have got the Horst Wessel Lied.
