Kandersteg to Adelboden via the Bunderchrinde 1982This page describes the route higher on the map. The lower route is the Engstligenalp alternative described on the next page. Off to Switzerland with my Father, aged 66. As there is a rail strike on, I left plenty of time to get to Gatwick and did it nicely. The 'plane took off on time but, when we got to Bern, we found that they had not loaded Dad's rucksack as well as some other people's cases, so Dad only has a sponge bag at the moment. After form filling and exchange of telephone numbers, we walked to Belp Station and went to Kandersteg, chatting up some American girls at Thun on the way. The Hotel National was closed, so we booked into the Hotel Les Alpes a100 metres away. Before dinner, we walked some way up the Oeschinensee path. Dad knows all the wild flowers. The barmaid was English and so were 5 of the other 7 guests. Apart from that, a nice little hotel.

Kandersteg is at 1172m. We got going at 0845, me taking everything in my rucksack (which is Jane's old one - Dad had mine). A flog up to the Üschinental. Dad took the rucksack for 15 minutes but that was it. He got very puffed on one horrid steep section spoilt by the road. Still, we got up to the Bunderchrinde 2384m in 4 hours exactly, which was not bad really. Good views NE including the Jungfrau and Blumlisalp ranges. Dad carried the rucksack down for most of the way, which is a much easier path. We met a nice American girl at the top and I sent her off over the Gemmi, I think. If no Dad, I would have gone into reverse and taken her! We had a can of alcohol-free beer above Adelboden, where I rang the airport who said the rucksack had not turned up and we must buy clothes and claim. This actually simplifies matters. Like Arosa, Adelboden at 1348m sits up the opposite side of the valley & we had to descend to 1201m first. We booked into the Hotel Adler but there was no chef. Then, we raided Oester Sport and spent £400 on my Barclaycard fitting Dad out again. That was only essentials. Then, to the Hotel Alpenrose for a big dinner and a bottle of Fendant. |
