Venice & Dubrovnik Cruise - Krka Waterfalls Page |
Wednesday 23rd October 2013 - to the waterfalls
Split from the motorway to Krka Falls
The waterfalls are about an hour's drive from Split, along the more-or-less coast motorway, past the castle on a blade of rock which guards Split. In fact, it runs through bleak limestone scenery with scattered bushes & looking very dry. The sea reappears just before we turn off for the National Park with the falls. Suddenly, we are in a wooded area, with the River KrKa seen far below in the form of two lakes, after excessive paperwork. The coach drops down several zig-zags but the river cannot be seen where it is to the West of the lakes. After parking, there are massive intimations of water. We walked down to the loos & a belvedere built for a visit by the emperor Franz Joseph in 1875 for a view of the top falls. Then, there is a series of boardwalks through woods, with small falls all over the place until a drop, which reveals the lower falls. There is a bridge over the river & a long flight of steps back to the car park, with possibilities to get closer to the water. An old German man tried to get too close, slipped & Ken had to rescue him. Then, the drive back to Split. |
