Germany 2019 - Eisenach Page |
We stayed 3 nights in Eisenach, principally for the JS Bach connexion here & in nearby towns. There seemed to be 2 centres, one North of the Lutherhaus, where he spent his school-days & the Frauenplein, quieter. In the opposite corner to the one shown her is Bach's birthplace.

Above the town stands the amazing Wartburg, nearly 1,000 years old.
It is a show-off, rather than a defensive structure but in a very defensible
position. It was used for song competitions, as in Wagner’s Tannhäuser &
was the birthplace of St.Elizabeth of Hungary.
It was also where Luther was hidden
by the Landgrave after the Diet of Worms & where he translated the New Testament.
