Germany 2019 - Ohrdruf & Arnstadt Page |
Ohrdruf
Ohrdruf was odd. Bach learned the organ in the Marienkirche. We asked 2 different obvious locals where the Marienkirche was & neither had a clue. I did spot a church tower off the centre & headed for it. We turned off onto a road we discovered was Johann Sebastian Bach Strasse, at the end of which was a small, scruffily maintained (or not at all) Platz & the church tower, with no church, so it must have been bombed like Islington’s St.Mary’s. So, I took my photos, not quite as I had expected.

Arnstadt
We parked near the Schloss (Baroque) & walked into the old town, stopping for coffee & a sort of quiche with fruit in it at a cheerful café opposite the Bach Church as they now call it. We went in & it was a delight with galleries like Herder’s Church in Weimar. Naturally, it had been very well looked after. There was a nice volunteer, who had to negotiate Ken’s bad German.

Ken nipped down to the Marienkirche, just for photos, as it is locked until 15:00.

On our way back, we spotted a castle, Veste Wachsenburg, on a hill near Holzhausen village, the photo giving a good idea of the countryside here.
