Xmas Cruise 2013 - Hamburg Page |
Tuesday 31st December 2013 New Year's Eve
Hamburg from the ship at 1413. Pity about the Incinerator!
We had arrived during the night in Hamburg. Because the tube at the Cruise Terminal is too new even for last year’s map, I had to ask Carmen on Reception, where we were. St. Pauli. It was first stop to Jungfernstieg and we walked round the smaller lake to the Gustav Mahler Park but there was no statue to him, only one of Schiller.

Then, over the bridge to the Kunsthalle, which is two buildings, a new cube and a Victorian one, connected by a tunnel. There were two travelling shows: one of Eva Hesse, who was not very good but had tried lots of new materials and Gego, who had gone to Venezuela & did things with wire, what she called drawings without paper. We spent much time looking at this. Then, we had a coffee and cake break (€10) and went round a show made up of Danish work collected by a rich Dane called Hirschsprung, who donated it to an unwilling state, getting a special building under way just before his death. Avis was not interested in this stuff, as it was nearly all 19thC but some was late and Skagen School and I photoed some for one of my shows, Nielsen, I think. We went through to the old gallery but their idea of modern art was Lovis Corinths later stuff. Nothing wrong with that.

We had another drink (€6.40) and a look at the Town Hall and Xmas Market on Jungfernstieg.

Then, we tubed back to the ship, the tubes at €5.60 altogether (4 tickets). I took photos towards the town centre from the top deck, the first time I had been up there this cruise because of the cold but there is an incinerator in the way of the view. The Captain’s farewell party, with prize-giving to the top crew members of the month, followed by lobster for dinner, this being another formal night and a variety show, On the way out of the restaurant, we were waylaid by Holly Farnworth & Amber Laura May of the Show Team, as they do, for the photo, right. I took off my DJ and bow tie to wrap up well for New Year’s Eve out on the aft deck, where after a sing-song and count down, the Gerries put on what seemed to be several firework displays, each better than the Teneriffe one last New Year's Day. There was also free ship’s champagne & more food but in that, we did not indulge. The next day was at sea on the way back to Southampton & Ken shrank his Father Christmas beard down to somethng more discreet. |
