All along the Mediterranean Cruise - Nora near Cagliari |
The trip to the Nora archaeological site took about 40 minutes & the native guide knew her stuff. She also mentioned their Prime Minister 'who's name escaped her'. The site runs North-South (the sea end) & was quite extensive. Some features had been badly damaged, largely it seems, by the sea. Originally, it had been occupied by the Phoenecians (today's Palestinians), the Carthaginians & the Romans, who redeveloped the site. It had been abandoned in the Middle Ages because of the Arab Corsairs raiding the coast, the people moving to Pula, a little way inland, presumably so they would have some warning from the watchtowers, which they built for the purpose & seen below & muster to resist the attackers. By that time, Sardinia was four separate kingdoms with, unusually, written constitutions.
