Spitzbergen via Norway - Mageroya Isle Page |
Friday July 26th 2014 - Honningsvåg is the port for Mageroya Island
Honningsvåg Harbour |
We arrived at Honnigsvåg through low cloud & a relatively high temperature of 14°C. To see Honninsgvåg completely & in better weather, follow this link to our 2012 cruise up here. We took a coach to two of the fishing ports on this island, firstly to Skarsvåg, which is only distinguished by being the most Northerly fishing port in the world. Otherwise, it is very functional. On arrival, we had glühwein without the wine & pancakes in the "Christmas Store", which is a souvenir shop & made our way round the village after that, not that it is very large. |

Kamoyvaer We drove some way back towards Honningsvåg but turned off before the big hotel to the left for the newish village of Kamoyvaer, the original having been on the other side of the fjord & swept away by an avalanche. This is distinctly cuter than Skarsvåg. We were first ushered into the gallery of a local collage artist, Eva Schmutterer, who was quite good but had got into a groove, presumably because her stuff sells. One cannot blame an artist for making a living! The harbour is quite neat & the large blue building is a Sami Hotel.

Then, we went back to Honningsvåg & mooched round to the harbour but it was now colder, so we went back to the ship for lunch. We were due to leave fairly early, so there was no time for expeditions along the footpaths above the village. For those, see this link. At 16:30, we left for Svalbard but first, the Captain took us round the North Cape.

Although the tour in the morning had had a hard time & the cape was covered in cloud, we had much clearer views than in 2012 & the Horn stood out well.
