Monday July 28th 2014 - To the Magdalena Fjord, 80° North & the Polar Pack Ice
Leaving Ny Ålesund
The Captain then took us North to the Magdalena Fjord past magnificent glaciers. There was a Russian research ship there. At the end is a blue (=old) ice glacier.
Turning North after leaving King's Bay, which is what Ny Ålesund is on

Farewell to the pack ice |
William told me the Captain had not been to the Magdalena Fjord before &, when we left, he turned left again & took us to the edge of the Polar pack ice. More to the point, we were at 80.01° North &, possibly, the most Northerly people in the World at the time. Not many people have ever been this far North. Then, the Captain turned South. We suspected that, as cruise ships are about to be banned in the Arctic, this was the Captain's last chance to see Polar pack ice! |
