Tuesday July 29th 2014 pm - Friday August 1st 2014 Heading back Southwards

Our last Svalbard glaciers

Our last Midnight Sun - more a failed sunset.

On the Wednesday, there was nothing to see but sea, as we headed South from Svalbard towards the Norwegian Coast proper.

Thursday was very different.

We got up at 08:05 & at breakfast, the Captain said we were ten minutes off the most beautiful part of the Norwegian Coast. He should know. So, we spent the whole morning on the top deck as we went East along Hadselfjord which bends South-East. Sundetfjord then goes off to the South (right side). Our target for the morning, the Troll Fjord, goes West off Sundetfjord.

Into the Troll Fjord

This became very windy but when the pilot took us round an island, the wind dropped. Just as well, as we then went into the Troll Fjord & the Sun making efforts to come out. The Braemar is a bit shorter than the Black Watch, but turning round seemed even more dramatic, with the bow not quite scraping the cliff & no life boat to pilot us in this time. The Captain said we could not get close enough to pick flowers, as the wind was too high.

We got closer than this!

The stern was close, too

Then, back into Sundetfjord & gradually further from land, as the Lofotens retreated to the West & Mainland Norway was visible but some way to the East. (More Troll Fjord pictures).
